English Translations of the Series

The Curious Casebook of Inspector Hanshichi - Detective Stories of Old Edo; Okamoto Kidō; English translation by Ian MacDonald; University of Hawai'i Press, Honolulu; 2007

This is an English translation of the 14 stories that comprise Volume 1 of the series. I don't know if there are any other English translations existing or in work. I hope that more of these stories get translated into English.

半七捕物長(六)、著者 岡本綺堂、光文社(時代小説)文庫、2001年12月20日(初版) ISBN978-4-334-73246-2

This is the sixth volume in the series, in paperback. This includes 7 stories and an "afterword" (解説). It also includes an interesting chronological table, showing when and where the action in the stories took place.

Note that I waited too long before purchasing this last volume and so wound up getting a much later printing than I have for the other volumes. This is the reason for the 13-digit ISBN shown here. Based on a comparison of comparable versions of the first volume it looks like the pagination of the text doesn't vary with printing, which is as I would expect, so this shouldn't affect the page and line number references given here.

Japanese Language Reference Books

The Modern Reader's Japanese-English Character Dictionary - Second Edition Revised; Andrew N. Nelson; Charles E. Tuttle Co., Inc.; 1974

My definitive character dictionary in English. This is the version that, out of habit, I usually use. When I can't find something here I then look in the newer edition.

The New Nelson Japanese-English Character Dictionary; Andrew N. Nelson and John H. Haig; Tuttle Publishing; 1997

I believe this is the latest edition. It does have some things that the earlier edition doesn't have.

Sanseido's Concise Japanese-English Dictionary, 11th edition; Sanseido 2001

For a long time this handy little volume was my first choice for looking up Japanese terms.

Seico Instruments Inc. IC Dictionary model SR-G9000; Kenkyusha's New Japanese-English Dictionary

Seico Instruments Inc. IC Dictionary model SR-G9000; Shogakukan Progressive Japanese-English Dictionary

As much as I like paper books and dictionaries I find myself using this electronic device almost exclusively when looking up Japanese words. The only exception is for looking up kanji, when I usually use Nelson's book. There are many reference works stored in this device but the two above are the ones I wind up using most often.
